(Chapel Hill, N.C.) It's a great time to be a food lover in the American South
Drawing on the region's triple treasure of farming, cooking, and writing, the University of North Carolina Press is proud to introduce the SAVOR THE SOUTH(tm) collection-handsomely designed little volumes dedicated to celebrating a beloved food or tradition of the American South.
Written by well-known cooks and food lovers, each book brims with personality, the informative and often surprising culinary and natural history of southern foodways, and a treasure of some fifty recipes-from delicious southern classics to sparkling international renditions that open up worlds of taste for cooks everywhere.
UNC Press plans to release four new volumes per year in the SAVOR THE SOUTH(tm) collection. Each will be priced at $18.00.
The first two of these eagerly anticipated cookbooks, arriving in stores in early September, will be PECANS by Kathleen Purvis (food editor of The Charlotte Observer) and BUTTERMILK by Debbie Moose (an award-winning food writer and author of five cookbooks).
Library Journal calls Purvis's volume on the South's favorite nut "a book for readers who can't get enough of pecans." Recipes include Broccoli-Pecan Salad, Honey-Pecan Chicken Thighs, and Pecan Meringue Bites.
Moose's BUTTERMILK explores the rich possibilities of this essential ingredient in recipes like Tex-Mex Corn Pudding, Bananaville Bread, and Lavender Ice Cream. Booklist says, "Each recipe includes not only how-to's but also a folksy introduction, an attribution (to a restaurant or person), and notes about substitutions and accompaniments."
This spring, UNC Press will publish PEACHES by Kelly Alexander and TOMATOES by Miriam Rubin. Other forthcoming titles include SWEET POTATOES by April McGreger, CATFISH by Paul and Angela Knipple, and BARBECUE by John Shelton Reed.
From buttermilk to bourbon, pecans to peaches, bacon to catfish, one by one SAVOR THE SOUTH(tm) cookbooks will stock a kitchen shelf with the flavors and culinary wisdom of this popular American regional cuisine.
